π Alternatives
What βalternativeβ means on this site
A different option for moving the same cargo to the same region. It does not mean cheaper: even when the benchmark is lower, transshipment, terminal, sailing schedule and inland haulage can change the total cost.
- Alternative origin port: same destination and mode, different origin port
- Alternative destination port: same origin port, another port in the same region
- Alternative mode: ocean and air (only where both corridors are in the dossier)
- Alternative carrier: same type, different alliance (no price ranking)
Alternative origin ports for the same destination
| Corridor | Benchmark | Range | Transit | vs this corridor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Antwerp β New York | $3,000 | $2,250~$3,750 (Β±25%) | 10-13 days | β$8,568 (β74%) |
| Rotterdam β New York | $3,062 | $2,756~$3,368 (Β±10%) | 10-13 days | β$8,506 (β74%) |
| Hamburg β New York | $3,125 | $2,344~$3,906 (Β±25%) | 11-14 days | β$8,443 (β73%) |
| Shanghai β New York | $9,303 | $8,373~$10,233 (Β±10%) | 26-31 days | β$2,265 (β20%) |
Alternative destination ports in the same region
| Corridor | Benchmark | Range | Transit | vs this corridor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Busan β Charleston | $11,445 | $8,584~$14,306 (Β±25%) | 27-32 days | β$123 (β1%) |
| Busan β Houston | $11,805 | $8,854~$14,756 (Β±25%) | 28-34 days | +$237 (+2%) |
Alternative mode: ocean and air
| Corridor | Transit | Benchmark | vs this corridor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Busan β New York (NJ) (Ocean) | 25-30 days | $0.58 per kg | β |
| Incheon β New York (JFK) (Air) | 1-2 days | $7.80 per kg | about 13x ocean |
The ocean figure assumes 20,000 kg of cargo in one container, converted to a per-kg rate. Air charges depend heavily on density (volumetric weight), so use this only to see the order of magnitude.
β What to check in the quotation
- Compare all-water, rail-landbridge and gulf options on total landed cost and transit variability.
- Confirm who bears chassis and per-diem exposure at inland ramps.
- Check the free-time clock start rule for rail-delivered containers.
- At US East and Gulf ports, import charges (security, port facility, wharfage) can be billed separately from July 2026. Check whether the quotation includes them.
The full 100-corridor table, 20ft estimates, port charges and sources are in the dossier and workbook.
Figures are reference benchmarks; confirm actual terms with a written quotation. (Data as of: 2026-11-07)
